Classic Inside 38/2010

EDITORIAL

It wasn't all talk of wolf–cub–fur pea jackets and silver fox coats (for men, obviously) last weekend.

It's true that conversations trackside at the Goodwood Revival were broad–ranging, but most concerned the stunning action happening just a few feet away, with 250 GTOs, 250Fs and DBR1s driven in the manner they were intended: absolutely flat–out, by top professionals or highly gifted amateurs.

While other events might have one or two races which capture the imagination, nothing can compare with the Revival's riveting appeal over two days. If the first–place car has it easy, you can rely on two facts: 1) that the winner thoroughly deserves his cigar, and 2) that just behind there will have been any number of almighty ding–dongs down the field.

The likes of Jean–Marc Gounon, Bobby Verdon–Roe and Frank Stippler at the wheel of so many original machines must surely be as exciting as the very best racing of the 50s and 60s.

With all this excitement, I think I need a lie–down. In fact, I will be on holiday for a few days, so Charis Whitcombe will be looking after the Classic Driver editorial office next week.
