What a gent. Referring to "mistakes like I made today", a contrite Lewis Hamilton made it quite clear where the responsibility for last weekend's faux pas lies — on his shoulders.
He won't need me to tell him that the rush of blood to the head might have cost him the Championship, allowing, as it did, Mark Webber back into top spot again. It made a refreshing change for a sporting star to take the rap themselves, instead of blaming others.
Real 'old school' stuff. And, speaking of which... today is the first day of the remarkable Revival meeting at Goodwood. So, throughout the land, detachable collars are being collected from the cleaners, brogues are receiving their final coat of polish and a convoy of bizarrely be–hatted Revivalists will make its way to the South Coast airfield circuit.
The weather forecast looks fair — so it's probably safe to leave the deer–stalker's waxed-cotton cape back in the attic. The event combines the British sense of ostensibly amateur fun, with a steely 'not seen to be trying too hard' competitiveness, like no other.
