Classic Inside 30/2010

EDITORIAL

It's taken me a couple of days, but I've finally nailed it. Far from being the younger sibling of the cutesy MINI, the new Countryman has a touch of the cuckoo about it.

In fact, add a sailor's hat to the white version shown in our driving report and you'd have an approximation of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.

I still like the concept of the car, though, and am genuinely excited at the prospect of red–and–white, Prodrive–developed MINI Countryman WRCs on the international rally scene next year. However, while it's possible to make smaller versions of large cars in a 'house style', doing things the other way round does not always work — as BMW (again, sorry, excellent company though it is) has found with the 7 Series past and present.

I expect it's a colour thing, and look forward to seeing some grey/green/black Countrymen exploring the metropolis in months to come.
