EDITORIAL

As driver–pairings go, the line–up at London's Roundhouse venue the other night wasn't a bad one: Moss and Brooks, Elford and Ickx, Andretti and Redman. Add Sir Jackie Stewart into the mix and you had to admit that the newly inaugurated Motor Sport magazine Hall of Fame was, by any standards, an illustrious one and well worthy of the name.

In a lively bit of banter between JYS and Sir Stirling, the old subject of safety was raised. Moss, having survived several nasty accidents and that final one which ended his career and so nearly killed him, still believes that motor racing should be "dangerous".

The Scottish triple World Champion, on the other hand, was at the forefront of the safety debate in the 60s and 70s which ultimately led to the emasculation of many circuits. Mile upon mile of multi–layer Armco was erected to replace simple wire and post fencing, while 1000s of trees and bushes were cleared to create run–off areas.

Until then, 'run–off' signified the actions of fleeing trackside photographers from an evolving accident.

Magnanimous as ever, Moss concluded the discussion by saying: "You were right all along — but I still think you were wrong!"

On the subject of safety, we move effortlessly to the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club and its 125th anniversary, celebrated in style by — among other events — a tour last week from London to St. Moritz.

We were there, and you can read about it today, plus more about the Club and a guide to that most exclusive winter resort.

A very special Lightweight E-Type

Built many years ago by the authoritative experts, Paul Webb and Mick Harris, this was constructed around the last brand new factory made bodyshell. The finest attention to correct detail has been made - ensuring the maximum authenticity possible - and it was exhaustively developed and honed to perfection, making it work superbly as well.

Detail includes aluminium panels, an aluminium engine block, and the best upgrade parts possible that maintain FIA registration. It is fully road compliant – and in fact a joy to use on the road. The project took a great deal of time and patience to complete and the result is quite incredible. The Briggs Cunningham Lightweights provided the theme and the famous blue stripes over cream remain as stunning today as ever. The registration number of 5104 WK shall remain with this car, and is the perfect finishing touch - considering that the original Briggs car was registered 5114 WK.

5104 WK is now truly established, recognized, and has a successful race and rally career behind it. The history and FIA papers assure that many doors are now open for its acceptance in the most prestigious competition events.
