Preparing a guide to next week's Monterey action brought back some happy memories from 2008. Whatever happens to classic car prices at the many auctions, it will be another magical week and, as I say in the preview, first–time visitors from Europe will be amazed by the number of cars you just never see this side of the pond.

We've tried to cover all the events; from the cultured lawns of Pebble Beach itself, to Monterey week's ultimate antidote, the 'Concours d'LeMons'. The latter was brought to my attention only recently and the website amused me hugely. If you can't go to the actual event — do at least visit its web page.

The covers will be off Crewe's new 'Grand Bentley' late on the final day at Pebble Beach. Meanwhile, Porsche has revamped its mighty 911 Turbo and is now offering a proper 'paddle' solution to gear changing on its now–PDK–equipped automatic version. It's only an option, mind, but at last buyers will be able to abandon the ill–thought–out steering wheel switches, once and for all.

What next? Putting the engine in the front? Oh, they've just done that.
