EDITORIAL
"They don't have Lords and Ladies and, more to the point, they
don't have Lord March."
So said Sir Stirling Moss, when asked why he thought American visitors
enjoy Goodwood so much a quote I have stolen from Roger Dixon's
wonderfully evocative account of the Festival of Speed, which you can
read in this week's newsletter.
Those of us at Goodwood last weekend might find it takes a while to
recover, physically and mentally, from the sheer enormity of it all.
From the improbable sight of Jenson Button, Sir Stirling Moss and American
TV star Jay Leno stopping for a chat. From the sound of modern F1 machinery
screaming in protest as it's bullied into tyre-smoking doughnuts for
the delectation of the (dare we say it?) less discerning members of
the crowd. And from the curious and no doubt lethal almond-scented
exhaust fumes emerging from a sparkling line of Silver Arrows.
"You can smell it when you're driving," confided Jochen Mass,
on seeing the wrinkled noses of the bystanders. "That's why racing
drivers die younger. Then again, they die happier."
But normal life goes on and the major story this week is the
new Jaguar XJ, unveiled last night at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
But is that really Jay Leno we see in the pictures? Or is it just another
Goodwood flashback?
Steve Wakefield, fresh from his holiday, will be settling firmly back
on the editorial throne next week.

Lola T292 DFV This was one of only 4 cars to be built by the factory as DFV cars. Although raced at Le mans and 1000 km races, these cars were also used as sprint and hillclimb cars in Europe which make them ideal for our relatively short races. Built with FGB gearboxes instead of the heavier DG300 and many other lightweight parts it is easy to achieve a weight 50-100 kgs lighter than the T280 series endurance models. The chassis is almost identical to the T282 which was the best model configuration. This car has a solid continuous history, is mentioned in one of the Lola books and is in a very original condition. Having been dry stored the car will need some light restoration but nothing serious. We have all the parts necessary to install the DFV motor and re-commission.
