EDITORIAL
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the first manned landing on the Moon, there's been quite a bit of TV coverage in the UK. We've had all the centrifuge stuff; the Saturn V slow–mos; the weightless simulations and the gold–leaf, 'flying bedstead' lunar module bouncing about during proving trials.
All very intereresting. Omega has joined the party with an anniversary edition of its Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, yet I see little yet from beleaguered GM on the special run of matching gold and black Corvettes chosen by the follow–up Moon mission astronauts of Apollo 12.
Making use of the generous 'astronaut–lease' programme, Charles Conrad Jr., Richard F. Gordon Jr. and Alan L. Bean not only ordered matching Riverside Gold 427/390 four–speed coupés, but also customised them with black–painted sections from to door hinge to tail–light as symbolic 'wings'.
A final touch was the 'LMP' (Lunar Module Pilot), 'CDR' (Commander) and 'CMP' (Command Module Pilot) graphics on contrasting red, white or blue patches on each car.
Resisting the temptation to say that nowadays they'd be driving Chevrolet Volts, I can only comment: "How cool was that?"
