EDITORIAL

As the Techno Classica review heads up this week's ClassicInside, I suppose I ought to opine on something, um, 'classic'. First of all, for anyone who's never been to Essen, let me say that without a shadow of a doubt it's the biggest and best single event of its type in the world.

I was talking to a friend the other day who'd just got back from his first visit and was amazed at the scale of it all. And that's not just because of the colossal floor–area. No, what impressed him was the sheer variety of cars on display: from a line–up of pre–War Horch roadsters to row upon row of '73 Carrera RSs.

Rétromobile is good, and there are other fine events worldwide. If you made the Pebble Beach week into a single event, perhaps that comes close.

The point that our correspondent makes is that if you do something properly, even in today's difficult market, it works. Top–notch cars for sale will sell. A quality event, well–priced and professionally organised, will be full of appreciative visitors. Look at the pictures in our Essen report of the Ferrari Classiche stand — it makes your mouth water.

This is the tried–and–tested principle that the Goodwood organisers have stuck to year after year, leaving the also–rans to shut up shop in 2009.

And, glancing at my dictionary, I see that one meaning of the word 'classic' is 'something of established excellence'. There you go, then.

interior colour Racing

year 1973
chassis 16363
estimate 2.500.000 - 3.200.000 EUR

The Ferrari 365 GTB 4 Competizione presented here, chassis no. 16363, was the second of the Series III factory competition Daytonas built, completed on 1 March 1973. A left-hand drive car, it was bought new by French Ferrari importer Charles Pozzi SA in Paris-Levallois Perret, France. Originally finished in Rosso Chiaro, it was immediately given the red and white livery of its sponsor, the Thomson electrical appliance company, by Carrosserie G. Rivillon in Paris.

It was also fitted with a small front spoiler below the grille, which was intended to allow for even higher speeds on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans. A rear diffuser was fitted for the same purpose – a unique feature on this particular car, which makes it instantly recognisable in period photographs at Le Mans in 1973.

Offered now after long-term ownership, it is ready to be enjoyed at the most important events in the world. With its unique Thomson livery, this is an iconic competition Ferrari with fantastic history, 400 bhp on tap and a shiver-inducing exhaust note that is sure to enliven any race or rally, Tour Auto and Modena Cento Ore included.
