EDITORIAL

We hear on the news that Tuesday saw Britain's continuing 'snow event' force 49 of the 55 state schools in Westminster to stay shut for a second day. This, despite the fact that there was no recorded snowfall in the area that day.

Meanwhile, in Birmingham, two inches of snow led to the two–day closure of all 428 state schools.

Jump back one week and the Classic Driver team was in the Austrian Alps, driving the new MINI Cooper S Convertible. As Jan–Christian Richter reports, the assembled British and German journalists drove the new car — often on rather more than two inches of snow — with the roof down for the entire 3hr 29min route. I don't recall a single 'crash event', as the BBC might call it.

BMW had also brought along Rauno Aaltonen (winner of the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally in a pre–BMW Mini), who kindly attempted to teach me the mysteries of left–foot braking on a short snow–driving course. While Rauno showed infinite patience at my less–than–expert driving, I doubt he could tolerate Britain's attitude to winter weather...

Steve Wakefield, incidentally, is not snow–bound at home but cavorting merrily at Rétromobile, in Paris. He'll be back next week. Weather permitting.

Arguably one of the most attractive cars produced in recent years by Bentley Motors.

The relative rarity and exclusivity of these models is now being recognised and despite the merits of the Continental GT models the discerning and knowledgable are now seeking good Continental R models in preference. In the longer term these are a classic in the making.

This particular car is finished in British Racing Green with Magnolia hide upholstery piped in Spruce. Conifer carpets complement the interior. The car was fitted with heated rear seats from new and the waistrails are inlaid with Bentley logos. The car has covered 59,000 miles and can be viewed at our premises.

SPORTING

Ferrari 312 B2

colour Red
interior colour Racing
year 1971
price P.O.R. GBP
country

The Ferrari 312 B2 Formula 1 car was first raced in 1971; a development of the 312B, with notably different rear suspension and rear wing, the 312 B2 scored an impressive victory at the Dutch Grand Prix in 1971.

For the 1972 season, the 312 B2 was again used by Ferrari in the F1 World Championship, and with drivers Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazoni, the team finished 4th in the World Championship with one victory at the German Grand Prix held at the Nürburgring. This car, Chassis Number 5, was the first of four 312 B2s built and one of only three remaining. It is the German Grand Prix-winning car from Jacky Ickx in 1972, (this was also his last F1 Victory).

Powered by a 3-litre, flat-12 cylinder - that set a new bench mark of 480hp at its launch in '71 - the engines became so strong that the same boxer engines continued to power Ferrari F1 cars until 1980 when the turbo powered cars became dominant. The car also retains the aerodynamic specification used by Ickx at the German Grand Prix in '72, as this was the defining moment of chassis 5's Grand Prix history.

Subject to a complete restoration over the last 9 months, the car has been sympathetically restored to preserve the history of the car while ensuring that it is capable of being used on track again. Most recently the car has been demonstrated at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix by Brian Redman, and was raced at the Grand Prix Masters Festival at Brands Hatch by James Hanson.

The car is complete and ready to race, and has both FIA Historic Technical Passport and Ferrari Certificate of Originality. For further information please call James Hanson on +44(0)1274 623210
