EDITORIAL

The Ferrari edged its way through dense London traffic. It was Knightsbridge — naturellement — and, finished in a stylish metallic blue, the side profile of the big V12 was classic Pininfarina: long bonnet, angular yet still almost ovoid greenhouse, and elegantly tapered boot.

All very nice, and driven by the sort of chap that you or I would approve of. And the best thing about it was that buying one right now is unlikely to cost more than £20,000 (that's a few beads, feathers or pieces of glass in most other currencies). Yes, it was a 400 (or 365 GT4 2+2, don't press me, as I wasn't that close) and it did look very good.

Which just goes to show that not only are there more attractive deals to be had out there on most cars, but that the Wakefield seal of approval can be received for Mondeo money.

And on the same theme, in this week's ClassicInside we have news from VW on the latest version of its wallet–saving Phaeton, and — depending on which way you view it — either the world's most expensive, fastest handbag or a cut–price special–edition Veyron: the Smart fortwo Édition Toile H.

However, some things are still reassuringly expensive and we've details of two new cabriolets: Bentley's glorious Azure T and the Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M.

The latter, no doubt, soon to be seen in a traffic jam near you.

Lamborghini Miura Roadster

year 1968

There is only one original Lamborghini Miura Roadster. This is it.

Low, taut and sleek, the Gandini-designed Miura was perfect for a roadster derivative which Gandini and Bertone created as a show concept for the Brussels Motor Show of January 1968. At Brussels and later Geneva in March it was a sensation. Following its show career it returned to the factory and was sold in 1969 to the New York-based International Lead Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO), who re-cast many of its parts to demonstrate the application of lead and zinc in automobiles.

Repainted iridescent green with tan leather interior the car was shipped all over the world to car manufacturing centres to be shown in motor and trade shows and in private viewings for automobile designers. It was then acquired by the Director of ILZRO who donated it to the Museum of Transportation in Brookline, MA. Some years later it was sold by the Museum, going first to the UK, then to Japan and eventually, via France, to the present US owner.

He entrusted the Miura Roadster to famed restorer Gary Bobileff for a total, 'no expense spared' rebuild to its original 1968 Brussels Show condition. An important detail was locating a sample of the original metallic blue paint under the added zinc details and duplicating it in the correct lacquer finish. The restoration was completed a week before the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where the Miura Roadster took second in the Lamborghini class to the first production 350GT. It received its award on the Pebble Beach ramp where it was driven by a very emotional factory test driver Valentino Balboni. In its entire 40 year life, the car has covered just 7,444km...

The unique 1968 Lamborghini Miura Roadster is considered by many as the most important Lamborghini in existence.

And if you don't like wind in your hair, Kidston SA have just consigned a stunning Lamborghini Miura SV...spoilt for choice!
