EDITORIAL
In politics, they would no doubt refer to it as the 'super-weekend'. Separated by 1000–odd miles, the auction 'contests' at Maranello and Newport Pagnell were for the world's leading collectors' hearts, minds and, let's face it, wallets.
Both events produced stunning results. I was at Fiorano when the hammer fell on the ex–James Coburn Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, while a packed Works Service witnessed a world–record price for an Aston Martin DB4GT road car. The combined total of both sales comes to around $55 million.
Not bad for a weekend's work.
Having travelled to Italy in some style — a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, which will be the subject of an article in the weeks to come on Classic Driver — I also had the opportunity to watch the Mille Miglia retrospective from the best possible vantage point: inside the grounds of the Ferrari factory.
"The most beautiful race in the world," as it was once described by Enzo Ferrari? I don't honestly know. However, the future for the event looks decidedly rosy in its latest format of more original–to–the–race cars.
