EDITORIAL

There's a strong Italian flavour to things this week.

First, there's news of a Ferrari drop-top GT, aiming to attract 'new recruits' to the marque. But for new recruits, don't read bottom-end buyers wanting an affordable route to Ferrari ownership. Oh no.

The brand-new V8 California is by no means 'entry-level' but it does have certain characteristics (such as super-smooth 7-speed dual-clutch transmission) ideal for buyers who shy away from the harder edge of Ferrari performance. I see only one downside to the new model and that's the multitude of predictable headlines. It'll be California Dreamin', everywhere. Betcha.

And then our Editor, Steve Wakefield, waxes lyrical about the Maserati GranTurismo, which he took for a long weekend's test drive and a trip to sunny Suffolk. Many pundits have bemoaned the relative lack of torque of the Trident's handsome 2+2, and are eagerly awaiting the sportier GranTurismo 'S', unveiled at Geneva in March. But not our Ed. Being something of a sophisticate himself, he admits to enjoying the comfortable, rather than neck-snapping, acceleration of the current model — a 'super car' rather than a 'supercar', he says. More Mercedes CL than Ferrari F430, apparently. Nothing wrong with that.

And finally, still on the Italian theme, Steve Wakefield is at the RM Ferrari auction in Maranello but will be back next week with a full report.

Grand Tourer: Maserati GranTurismo

This is a super car. Please don't confuse that statement with the over-used expression 'supercar', as Maserati's current GT is more of a rival to a Mercedes CL than an F430. That said, anyone considering a pre-owned DB9 or Bentley Continental GT would be well advised to try the GranTurismo. read more...
