EDITORIAL
Bond's early morning reverie was interrupted by a brisk ring of the doorbell. Slipping on his New & Lingwood dressing gown, Bond swiftly covered the few paces from bedroom to the front door of his discreet Mayfair apartment.
"Parcel for Mr Somerset?"
It had arrived. The Fairbairn–Sykes made short work of the plain brown wrapping and Bond thoughtfully folded the discarded cardboard before filing it amongst the other 'non–food recyclables'. He did, after all, have a responsibility to save the world.
"What is it, darling?"
"Just that David Leadbetter book I ordered from Amazon," Bond replied. Damn the woman, she was becoming too inquisitive.
Removing the Plexiglass slip case, he let the heavy leather–bound book rest in his lap. Italian leather — just as he'd specified, and finished in a dark burnt oak colour. He was expecting its arrival, and eagerly anticipated the secret within.
That the book was weighty was no surprise, as inside the carefully sculpted enclosure rested a pewter–coloured model car. It felt good in his hands as he dashed it along the rough edge of the fireplace hearth.
The once–smooth lines of the open–top Bentley were now scarred and spoilt forever. And underneath the dull grey finish appeared flashes of brilliant yellow metal.
So that was Goldfinger's latest plan.

It's hard to think of any other car which evokes more appreciative 'oohs' and 'aahs' from bystanders as it passes- or stops to allow passengers out- nor more dinner party recognition ("is that the one with the doors that open upwards?") than the Mercedes-Benz 300SL, or 'Gullwing' as it is popularly known.
This late example dates from November 1956 and as such incorporates all but one of the 61 detail improvements introduced during Gullwing production. Originally black (code DB40) with red leather upholstery, the car spent most of its life in the USA and was acquired in Europe by its present owner, a popular Italian collector, in the 1990s. A complete, body-off restoration was undertaken in Italy with mechanics entrusted to renowned specialists HK Engineering in Polling, Germany, including upgrading the braking system with discs at the front. Since completion the car has taken part in the Tour Auto and Italia Classica and has seen sparing road use from Italy to the Côte d'Azur in summer with complete reliability. Ready for use, and eligible for almost every imaginable event, this is a well-sorted example of one of history's great motoring icons.

Chassis 2705908 is the ex-Brescia Corse Sports 2000 that in 1970 was driven by Luigi Moreschi and Sandro Munari in various hillclimbs and races, including the Monza 1,000 Kilometres. Munari also drove the car in the Giro di Belgio which he led until electrical problems caused retirement. In addition, Luigi Moreschi and PAM raced the Abarth in the Zeltweg 1,000 Kilometres, the latter also contesting the La Mendola Hillclimb while GIBI drove it at the Trento Bondone Hillclimb.
The subject of a no expense-spared restoration within the last 12 months by Moreschi Motor Sport and Stephen Griswold - during which a new cylinder block, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, timing gears and other major engine components were fitted - the car is now finished in Abarth red rather than the dark blue paintwork it ran with in period. Strikingly pretty and perfectly presented, this extremely rapid and famous Abarth, which comes complete with a Historic Technical Passport, is offered in truly excellent and race-ready condition and it would be a highly competitive machine in a variety of historic motor sport events.
