EDITORIAL
One of my dictionary's definitions of the word homage is 'anything done or rendered as an acknowledgement of superiority'. So, BMW has spent squillions on a (quite literally...) sparkly design project — shown at Villa d'Este last weekend — yet at the same time holds up its hands to say, "Well, fair enough, we just can't seem to do anything as good as the original M1, so we'll remind people how good that was."
Like the BMW Concept CS that first saw light in 2007, the BMW M1 Homage has clearly been to the buffet table one time too many. Quite why these new cars need to be so big is lost on me, particularly given the prevailing wind of eco-engineering demanding a lighter touch.
Why did Ferrari's Technical Innovation Seminar last summer focus on low weight, small dimensions and high-performance smaller-capacity engines? Because that's clearly the way forward and it's surprising that BMW, the leaders in spectacularly low everyday road car CO2 reduction, keeps churning out these behemoths.
An action-packed ClassicInside today, with previews of several of May's important European auctions, and a couple of ideas for the summer: having a once–in–a–lifetime ride in a DBRS9 at Goodwood, or ordering a nigh–on perfect 'continuation' GT40.

Are you 'experienced'?
Imagine spending some time alongside Paddy Hopkirk in a Mini Cooper rally car, then accompanying John Surtees testing a Lola T70 — pretty good, eh? Well, I've been doing the modern equivalent recently, courtesy of Prodrive.

Classic Driver Dealer: Martin Chisholm
'A little out of the ordinary'
"There are so many dealers out there who specialise: they focus on E-types or Aston Martins, or Rolls-Royce or Bentley. We specialise, too, but not in a specific marque. We just look for cars which are that bit different; something out of the ordinary." read

Chassis No. 003 is the second production car built. It's been in Japan since 1995 with the same owner.
In the words of Harold Dermott (Head of Customer Care, McLaren Automotive Ltd):
F1/003 was built in May 1994 and used as a demonstrator and development vehicle by McLaren until early 1996 when a sale was agreed to the current owner, the car being shipped to Japan in October 1996.
The car was sold as a used vehicle, but underwent a full mechanical check, which included fitting a new clutch and windscreen, as well as a host of detailed work. The car was completely repainted to OE specification, and the interior door trims were re-trimmed. The mileage when it left McLaren was 20,666 km.
McLaren only built 64 short-tail road cars. The total McLaren production was 107 cars: 64 short-tail road cars, 3 long-tail road cars, 29 F1 GTR race cars, 5 F1 LM commemorative road cars, and 7 prototypes.
