EDITORIAL
I don't want to get too star–struck, but it's amazing the effect the 'right' kind of famous personality can have on a product. And that's in a sort of pre–dated way, in that if Hollywood hunk Rocky McLaughlin chose to drive a Porsche 356 or Shelby GT350 and was photographed in same in the 60s, we'd all get terribly dewy–eyed and emotional about it.
"There you go. Those were the days; he looks cool. I've always fancied one of those." You know the sort of thing. But nowadays, put a celebrity in a car, or tie a watch on his or her wrist and the 21st Century cynic thinks, "Well, I wonder how much they got paid for that…"
It's jealousy of course. It's bad enough seeing how much Rockers gets for his film or recording contract (and I'm not even bringing celebrity sportsmen into this) but then getting showered in freebies…it's a disgrace.
In the same position we would, naturally, turn any such offers down. "No, no, really I am quite well–rewarded enough, thank you very much."
The reason for this musing is the car you see headlining this edition of ClassicInside, the ex–James Coburn 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder. You just know he would have chosen that car himself.
You're not going to star in movies such as The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape and drive the 1960s equivalent of a Prius, are you?
