EDITORIAL
Well, the story's finally out; Aston Martin's new DBS has hit the road, and after two days' driving in south-western France we can bring you the first full road test.
I won't spoil the article featured below; however, both Vanquish S Ultimate Edition owners and those with deposits on the DBS can rest easy - it's a new car from the company that's an accompaniment to models past, not a replacement.
Dr Bez was eager to emphasise its characteristics of ‘light and shade'. That is to say, it has the potential to be very sporty, as well as comfortable and calm, all in the course of a period of time that could be as short as a journey, or as long as the life of the car.
I like the idea of that, and with the car's adjustable suspension, excellent ride, luxurious cabin and carbon brakes it will handle just about anything thrown at it.
Anyway, I'll let you be the judge.
THIS WEEK IN CLASSIC DRIVER
Aston Martin DBS - First Drive
At the cutting edge
Classic Driver first published photographs of the new DBS in May 2006. Since then, the car has played centre-stage in the latest Bond film, and toured the world's shows and events. Yet no journalist had driven a production car on the road - until earlier this week.

This ex-Californian car (complete with original handbook and service record) was sold by us to a local customer 16 years ago. A full, photographically documented restoration has recently been completed, including much work carried out by us. This restoration included a bare metal repaint, new interior and a rebuilt engine.
The car is now RHD and has been upgraded with a discretely fitted overdrive and electronic ignition. Superbly finished in Opalescent Silver Blue with Dark Blue upholstery and fitted with genuine Minilite wheels, the car comes with 12 months MOT.

2nd Place Finish at 1987 Daytona 24 Hours, 10th Overall at 1989 Le Mans 1987 Porsche 962C IMSA s/n 962-128 Yellow and Blue Hydro Aluminum Livery. Described by Derek Bell as "a beautifully efficient machine, easy to drive, with no bad habits".
Today the car remains in very good to excellent condition cosmetically. The bodywork has virtually no time on the period livery repaint. The chassis is nicely detailed and polished, as are the like-new BBS wheels.
The interior is trimmed and labeled as it would have been in period, and is extremely clean.
Today, with the advent of historic race events for which these cars are eligible, they are no longer merely old racecars, but have instead become eminently usable once again, recapturing much of the excitement and glory of when Porsche so authoritatively and completely reaffirmed their motor sports pedigree, which includes such legendary cars as the 550, 718, 906, 908, 910, 917, 934, 935, and 936.
Prototype racecars such as this 962 are now highly sought-after by individuals who watched them dominate the world of Endurance Sports Car Racing in their heyday, and are now financially able to relive those memories - this time from the driver's seat.
