EDITORIAL
Other than a collective sense of relief at removing 116,000 pairs of court shoes, winkle pickers or National Service-issue ammunition boots, the post-Revival reaction of most spectators at Goodwood last weekend must have been ‘How do they put on such a fantastic show every year?'
It was utterly superb and if I didn't do quite enough justice to the Mongolian yurts in the Peking-Paris diorama I can only apologise, begging your indulgence at being confronted with so many sights and sounds with yet so little time to take them all in. Jean-Marc Gounon quite rightly deserved the Rolex Driver of the Meeting award, having excelled in every race he entered and professing at the prize-giving interview that he wished he'd been born fifty years earlier, in order to have driven these cars in period.
As we say in the report, a comparison of his lap times in the DBR2 with later rear-engined single-seaters shows just a second's difference. Quite incredible and, as with so many things at Goodwood, a genuine ‘step back in time' to when Moss, Behra, Salvadori, Hill and Clark would have driven in exactly the same manner.
It's Frankfurt Show time next week and clearly the manufacturers can't contain themselves as we have several cars in ClassicInside today that will see the light in a few days' time. We'll be there on Tuesday and look forward to telling you all about it in next Friday's edition.
