EDITORIAL

This week in ClassicInside we have two excellent examples of how best to enjoy very expensive motor cars - by driving them. There’s the car that brightened up a damp and soggy Goodwood Festival, the fantastic Pininfarina Ferrari P4/5, and a rare Bugatti Type 57C Atalante that had been stored up for 45 years, sold as a ‘barn find’ in early June this year yet will be at Pebble Beach in a couple of weeks, driven by its new owner in the burgeoning Preservation Class.

I like the quote from the Ferrari’s owner regarding the use to which he puts the one-off car; "That car’s done 4,000 miles, including 800 miles in Sicily. It’s muddy, it’s dirty and it’s got a rock chip from the Targa Florio - is that so bad?" Not at all, and it evokes the spirit of many diehard collectors who will use their priceless cars come rain or shine.

Of course the price of something like a 250 GTO is such that however much you abuse it, any slight wear and tear is a drop in the ocean compared to its value. And some cars, pre-War Bentleys for example, look better with a patina of road grime, stone chips, and worn high-points on their paintwork.

You wouldn’t want that to happen to your new Bentley Continental GT Speed and MINI Clubman, two new cars announced this week that will be available later in the year. The Bentley’s obviously fantastic, while the MINI will be a hit in the urban jungle despite a fully optioned price that will make your eyes water.

Santorini at its best

Santorini is renowned for some of the most breathtaking views in the world and Villa Vassilikos, beautifully carved into the rocks at the highest point of the Caldera, offers the ideal vantage point from which to enjoy them. The original cave-like structures have been modified to create simple and elegant spaces, paying particular attention to comfort and detail. Large terraces, on multiple levels, that seem to extend into the sea below, give you the option to either isolate yourself or mingle with the rest of the group. All interiors are naturally cool and quiet, an oasis on those sunny and hot Santorini days.

Conveniently situated in the middle of the island, the villa is close to everything, yet far away... Whether you want to have drinks and dance around the pool all night or share a blanket gazing at the stars, explore the island, or just sunbathe all day, at Villa Vassilikos you will experience the best that this extraordinary island has to offer.

year 1957
price 225.000 USD

This B24S Cabriolet was originally delivered in Italy and then to a collection in Switzerland. Imported to the USA in the late 1970s, this car can now be described as a true survivor that has been sympathetically restored.

Always in the hands of careful enthusiasts, this B24 was painted and retrimmed once and the entire mechanicals were rebuilt in the 1990s so the car could participate flawlessly while touring in China. No sign of any accidents or rust repair ever, with great panel fit and now sporting a new top as well.

After being imported to the USA, this car was fitted with Spyder bumpers making it much more sleek than the usual B24 Cabriolet. The original bumpers have been located should the new owner feel obliged to refit them. Jack, tools, tool bag, hubcaps, steering wheel, all original.
