Editorial

Is the 725 HP (unwarranted, please note) promised by Shelby Automobiles for their modified GT500 “Super Snakes” a step too far? How could you possibly use such colossal vigour on the public highway without burning gigantic strips in the tarmacadam? It’s nice to know the famed American snake charmer will be adding a ‘Ford Racing Handling Pack’ to the set-up – well that’ll be alright then.

In the last week I’ve had, in date order; 425 HP, 400 HP and (this is the big one, and I have a dyno sheet to prove it…) a whacking 612 HP under my right foot. Does 612 HP feel faster than 400, let alone 425 HP? Well it did actually, it was biblically quick - helped in no small way by the 552 lbft of torque available at 3800 rpm.

By way of contrast we’ve gone the tried and trusted route for this weekend, driving out of London and up to Silverstone in a standard Porsche 911 Carrera, a car that would probably whup just about any of the others on a handling circuit, and be pretty handy in a straight line too.

Full details of this, and some of the other super-powerful machinery tested recently, in next week’s ClassicInside.

One of the ‘last of the line’ nine Vantage Volantes to a unique specification. Of these, one would be built to former long-wheelbase Vantage Volante specification while the remaining eight would all become ‘SWB’ Vantage Volantes on the Vantage coupé’s shorter wheelbase. Of these, three were built to European left-hand drive specification and five were UK right-hand drive.

Chassis ‘71001’ represents what may be the only opportunity to purchase one of these very special and unrepeatable motor cars, perhaps for very many years to come.

Completely Restored, Serial # 11899019R, Engine # 4080178, Type 901/02.

911 R # 11899019R was sold new in 1968 by Vasek Polak Porsche to IMSA racer Bob Barnes. Apparently it was never picked up by Barnes and instead sold in 1969 to Cullen Crabbe (Buster Crabbe’s son). Cullen Crabbe raced it in IMSA specification (White with Orange Stripe/# 32 livery). It was sold in 1978 to Bill Lanphear, Burbank, California. It was restored in 1985 by Dan McLoughlin of AIR (American International Racing) although it was sold to a Japanese collector without its engine and gearbox. While in Japan a 2.0 liter 901/02 motor with correct gearbox was sourced and installed to this 911R.

This 911 R remained in Japan until August 2005 when it was re-imported to the United States. At this time it was sold to its current ownership where it has remained until recently being consigned for sale with Autosport Designs, Inc. It is currently in show condition with all correct 911 R bits and pieces.
