Editorial

“Look at the specification, look at the quality and read the performance figures”. A quote from Tony Dron’s driving impressions of the Audi R8, which you can read about in ClassicInside this week. A big fan of RS Audi saloons and estates, I’m not mad about the looks of the new mid-engined supercar, but I defer to Tony’s opinion with regards to handling and performance and, as always, you can take Audi’s superlative standard of finish for granted.

For that sort of outlay we’re in Porsche 911 territory, as well as pre-owned Astons and Ferraris. Better badges on all for sure, but better cars? Probably not.

Next Friday will see your Editor embarking on the 2007 London to Silverstone Supercar Tour - in something suitable of course - and there may well be just one or two places left, so do contact the organisers to book a place on what was an unforgettable event in 2006.

Looking forward to meeting some of you there.

AC Ace 'Bristol'

colour Red
interior colour Black leather
drive LHD
year 1957
price P.O.R. USD
country
This beautifully restored and presented AC Ace was shipped from the factory at Thames Ditton to the Los Angeles importers in 1957. The car was originally built as an AC-engined model but soon fitted with the correct type of Bristol 100D2 unit in the late 1960s, thereby upgrading it with more useful performance. The owner at the time, Mr. Ashenfelter, resided in Los Angeles and he actually showed the car at the Pebble Beach Concours in 1969 and 1970 where it was awarded third in class in both years.

In the mid 1980s, the Ace was sold to a Mr. Sharp of Glendale, California together with two more ACs from the Estate. At some point he removed the engine and transmission for use in another of his ACs.

The present owner acquired the car in 1993 and commissioned a full mechanical restoration which included the installation of the current Bristol unit (110D2 889) and driveline together with all correct Bristol components. Final restoration was completed at Mike Wilson’s Restorations in Visalia, CA. This included a bare metal repaint and body restoration as well as a full leather interior.

Very much sought after today as these sports cars offer excellent value, are superb to drive particularly with the Bristol power unit and eligible for all post-war touring events.
