Editorial

The photo above is an evocative one, and an example perhaps from a collection of 1960s’ prints perhaps? Not so. Perhaps a giveaway is the four-layer Armco but that apart, the scene of a Ferrari GT car at the ‘Ring is timeless and shows just how lucky we are in still having access to what everyone considers to be the greatest circuit of all time.

After an extensive tree-cutting and barrier-erection programme in the early ‘70s, the track was undoubtedly made safer (though not enough for the ‘big-ticket’ F1 and sports car meetings) yet still retained its endless crests, dips and swoops mixed with very fast undulating straights. It’s not for the foolhardy, and one regularly hears stories of local experts in Opels trouncing visiting supercars.

We’ve a nice piece below that includes impressions of a passenger ride in the very car that Tony Brooks drove to victory in the 1957 Nürburgring 1,000 kms. And it’s nice to know that (in the right hands of course) this very potent Aston can humble be-winged and wide-tyred modern machinery.

Which brings me neatly on to a future article in ClassicInside, the inside line on one of the world’s ultimate Gentleman Racers; the Aston Martin DBRS9. Having experienced VIP access to the way the team build and prepare the cars, it was only right and proper that your Editor should be strapped alongside works ALMS driver Pedro Lamy for a few laps of Silverstone. Full details to follow…

Aston Martin DB4GT

This car saw very little use in its early life before being sold to Craig Dent (an enthusiastic memeber of the AMOC) in 1971, who personally campaigned the car in hill climbs and sprints, also entering well known Aston Martin expert Richard Williams in a race at Brands Hatch. In 1972 the car was purchased by former AMOC President Don Aylett who owned the car until late 1975 when it was purchased by Michael Salmon. Owners in the 90s included the late Victor Gauntlett.

The last owner has used the car sparingly, and in his hands maintenance has been carried out by RS Williams over the last few years, however a concerted effort has been made to keep the car in its original state and not to carry out any modifications if at all possible.

Therefore the engine is still 3.7 litres, the suspension and brakes are to standard specification, the chassis is unrestored and there are no signs of patching or temporary repairs, while the general condition of the coach work is good.

Currently displaying 34,000 miles, rarely does one come across an important car such as this example, which has not been modified, rebuilt or restored. A file containing various invoice letters from previous owner and general correspondence accompanies the car.

Porsche 908/3

Offered here is the ex-Vic Elford 1970 Targa Florio works entry (Porsche Salzburg) with chassis number 007. In Italy Elford qualified in second position with a lap time of 34.46 minutes, only beaten by its sister car driven by Jo Siffert. Just after the start, Elford touched a kerb (puncturing a tyre) and smashed the car into a wall.

The car was then repaired and upgraded to 1971 specification over the winter. Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko drove chassis 007 at the Nürburgring 1000 kms, the Martini-sponsored car finishing third behind two other 908/3s driven by Elford/Larrousse and Rodriguez/Siffert.

Today the car is presented in perfect condition throughout. After its full restoration in 2000 it comes in its evocative 1970 Targa Florio livery of white and red. The car is fitted with the original 3-litre, eight-cylinder magnesium engine with matching numbers and is ready to go.
