Editorial

Another week in the summer, another raft of worldwide events for the motoring enthusiast. Seven days ago it was the Silverstone Classic and in just a couple of weeks’ time it will be the annual festival at the Monterey Peninsular that encompasses auctions, historic racing, concours and new car debuts.

We’ll have a preview of that next Friday but in this week’s edition you can read all about last weekend’s racing as well as having a hint of things to come in the US with the first auction preview.

The venerable G-Wagen just will not lie down and I see Mercedes have introduced the latest version of its mighty 5.5–litre supercharged V8 into the slab-sided 4 x 4 for the discerning client, a car that will celebrate its 30th birthday in 3 years’ time.

We’ve seen Range Rovers, ML Mercedes and sundry Japanese and US wannabes come and go in that time, but for many people the ‘G’ is the best and, original 1970s Range Rover apart, the most stylish.

The fact that it is awesomely effective off-road does it no harm at all of course, but motorists should beware of the oversized Lego-brick on wheels bearing down on them at great speed this autumn – it’ll be a G 55 AMG and it won’t be taking prisoners.

Porsche 911 'R' Prototype

One of the pinnacles of the 911's evolution was undoubtedly the 911R; the super lightweight package mated to an out and out racing engine sourced from the 906 was a formidable package. Chassis 307670 was one of the four factory prototypes and was internally referred to as R/4.

Displaying just 7,500kms on the odometer, this must be the least-travelled 911R extant and certainly the most unmolested.

The opportunity to purchase a 911R is a seldom one at best and Christie's are delighted to be offering this time-warp example with an intriguing past.
