Editorial

The post-event verdict on the 2006 Le Mans Classic was quite clear: the most enjoyable so far and, despite some serious accidents, a ‘must-do’ for any driver of historic sports cars. The organisation had been tightened up to make life easier for the competitors who, despite not racing constantly for 24 hours, need to be constantly shuttling backwards and forwards from paddock to grid.

The permanent circuit itself had benefited from a makeover first seen at the ‘modern’ Vingt Quattre Heures last month and the result then was a record-breaking crowd – a feat no doubted repeated at the Classic. We are fortunate to not only have some fantastic photography (with more to come next week, and videos too), but also a report written by one of the competitors in Grid 2 who finished 6th overall.

Your Editor stayed at home, taking the opportunity of visiting the Goodwood Festival on Friday and seeing at first hand the fabulous Ferrari 612 Scaglietti manufactured under the company’s Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme to a bespoke specification from über-cool style magazine Wallpaper*. Photographs do not do justice to the cleverly-executed two-tone (Nero and Blu Pozzi) bodywork and beautifully styled interior in black and dark navy. If you get a chance, do try and see the car – it’s gorgeous.

And likewise the Ferrari: New Concepts of the Myth exhibition of 1:4 scale styling concepts penned by the world’s young up and coming designers for the greatest Italian marque; all tremendously inspiring stuff.

Until next week when, time pressures allowing, we’ll tell you all about an unforgettable trans-European trip in the car of the year...

McLaren Formula One MP4-9/A3

At the end of the 1994 season, McLaren and Peugeot parted company and this car, MP4-9A-3 was handed over, after a complete rebuild, to Peugeot.

It was displayed initially in their factory collection, and was latterly a star exhibit at the French National Motor Museum, before Pierre Peugeot received an approach which he could not refuse from a car collecting friend.

It's that same friend who today, six years later and after Peugeot's death, has entrusted Kidston SA with the private sale of the McLaren.

Resplendent in its distinctive Marlboro livery, and unusually fitted with a proper engine (not a dummy) and even a complete spare (serial '007'), it has to be the ultimate track day or Euroboss series car.
