Editorial

It’s something of the lull before the storm this week as two major events start today on different sides of the English Channel.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed will once again be the place to have unprecedented access to the latest racing machinery, supercars and of course the most wonderful and rare vehicles from a century of motoring, while a few hundred miles to the south the magnificent semi-permanent circuit at Le Mans will be closed to everyday traffic again, just three weeks after this year’s modern 24 Hours, this time for the Le Mans Classic.

It’s been a hard call for many to decide where to head (you could of course ‘do the double’) but your Editor will stay in the UK, with the prospect of an exciting continental trip starting on Monday that will be a feature in Classic Insides to come. We will naturally be covering both events and hope to have all the action for you next week.

Until then,

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

Built to special order, and originally sold to Baron Rüdiger von Hirschberg, of Hirschberg am Haarsee, Weilheim near Munich. Born in 1907 he was the son of Sophie, countess of Faber-Castell.

Having subsequently spent time in the Massachusetts and New Jersey areas of the United States, and having passed through the ownership of respected 300SL authority Alex Dearborn, this well presented Gullwing was restored approximately 10 years ago, since when it has formed part of a private collection.

This remains a stunning example of this most iconic of post war designs which are renowned for their usability and in this case benefits from a fascinating early history.
