Editorial

We’ve come back from press launches in two very significant new German luxury cars; the Porsche Cayman S and 2006 Mercedes S-Class. Both of them produced by manufacturers synonymous with efficiency, reliability and performance, one is setting the standard (again) for luxury saloons, while the other is creating a new micro-segment in its range for those looking for a new alternative to a used 911 in price.

They are both very good, as you can read below.

There’s also news of a convertible version of Bentley’s ultra-successful Continental GT that will be available to order next year. It had been on the cards since the Coupé was launched a couple of years ago, and the sketches that the British company unveil below reveal a balanced design in the compact footprint of the two-door coupé.

I don’t know why, but I’m reminded of Mercedes 300S convertibles and coupés of the 1950s in size and pricing. Expensive, but below a Rolls or Bentley of the time - and beautifully made. It’s probably a tiny market, but I’m surprised M-B do not make a soft top CL-Class. No doubt there are tuning companies out there who offer such a version, but it’s not quite the same as original production.

Perhaps when the CL is re-vitalised in line with the 2006 'S' we may such a creature.

Aston Martin DB5

This model was destined to gain immortality when James Bond drove an imaginatively enhanced version in the 1964 film Goldfinger.

The DB5 of 1964 was a huge improvement on its predecessor the DB4. Outwardly identifiable by its cowled headlamps, the engine capacity was also increased to 4 litres and a ZF gearbox installed. The DB5 is still considered to be the ultimate design shape of all the DB series.

This 1965 model is finished in a stunning Royal Blue with Biscuit leather interior. The car is in exceptional original condition, having benefited from a complete body and interior restoration in 1989 by the Vintage Carriage Company, where a fully documented bare-metal body restoration and interior retrim took place. Mechanically the car was also rebuilt at this time, including a full engine rebuild. The car comes with numerous original service books and a simply huge history file containing restoration receipts, old MOTs, service history, etc. Although not a concours car, it is in exceptional presentable condition and should require little enhancement.

With DB5s achieving up to £200,000 for a concours examples, this represents excellent value.
