Editorial

Well, I hope you all enjoyed yourself at Goodwood last weekend as much as I did - another fantastic event that you can read about below.

The pre-1966 car park on the outside of the circuit, just by the Bonhams auction tent, provided a good hour’s worth of entertainment, and alongside that were trade stands from Jaguar (showing the new XK), as well as dealer representation for Aston Martin and Bentley. The XK looks a better proportioned car than its predecessor, and when the chaps on the stand started it up on Sunday afternoon it sounded throatier too. Meanwhile Aston’s little V8 Vantage (you couldn’t have said those words together before!) was really drawing the crowds.

It had to happen, Lamborghini used a ‘conventional’ opening on the fabulous Gallardo, partly I guess to separate it from their ‘super-sports’ cars like the Diablo and Countach, and now someone (marque specialist BF Performance) has produced a modification to give the little car an extra ‘lift’, with upward-travelling doors. There’s an R-GT pack for its older brother too, for those who want the ultimate in performance and looks.

Could this technological trick be done on Mercedes’ SLK and SL? Probably not I suppose given the soft top, but it would be an interesting way of entering the ‘Gullwing Club’ at a more modest price.

Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II Long Wheelbase by Radford

Without doubt, the most spectacularly factory optioned Rolls-Royce we have ever seen. Commissioned by a Texas oil magnate in 1962, the car was fitted with some extraordinary features. Apparently he was not a fan of the new four-headlight front of the Cloud IIIs and so requested that the car be assembled with the more traditional Cloud II front end incorporating Marchal 'Ampilux' headlights, and a cockpit-adjustable 'Rotoflare' spotlight. Interestingly enough, the car still retains the Cloud III tail light assemblies however.

In addition to his exterior requests he specified a second complete fascia with a full complement of switches and gauges to be installed in the rear compartment including a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge and even a compass and altimeter!

Under the picnic tables are special storage compartments for the Sterling Silver flasks and crystal glasses. In the front doors there are further compartments containing beautiful leather bound flasks and shot glasses. Beneath the back seat is a special holder for a walking cane with yet another concealed flask! In the rear centre armrest there is a leather-bound note pad, cigarette case and powder compact, each embossed with the Rolls-Royce logo.

The trunk is replete with a fold-out Formica-topped picnic table and cover. Rounding out the package, the car is fitted with separate front and rear air-conditioning and has its original books and tools.

The perfect addition to any serious Rolls-Royce collection.
