Editorial

An action-packed week, with a Classic Inside full of interesting stories. Frankfurt has seen some attractive cars launched into a market place devoid of new product over the summer months. I really like the BMW Z4 Coupé, a car in the mould of the late-lamented Z3M, and sure to make it into production next year as a real rival to the Porsche Cayman S and top-model Audi TT (or whatever they have on offer at the time). The MINI Traveller is cute - remember the wonderful Carrozzeria Castagna design exercises at Geneva last year? - and makes one of the 21st Century’s biggest automotive success stories even more desirable.

From a completely crazy (but in relatively mainstream production) viewpoint, hats-off to Brabus for making the outrageous 730 bhp, bi-turbo 6,233 cc V12-powered Rocket version of Mercedes already potent CLS. The Bottrop company states that the car is ‘The World's Fastest Four-Door Coupé’, and ordinarily I’d allow a little sniping at the fact that 'there ain’t an awful lot of opposition in that category matey', but they’ve produced another completely over-the-top car for us to goggle at - and there’s nothing wrong with that.

The guys pounding the beat at Frankfurt voted the Fenomenon Stratos ‘Best in Show’. The original became an instant icon and the design re-visited 30 years on has been freshened and sharpened to give it renewed emphasis for the new millennium. And painting it in the green/white/red Alitalia rally colours of the period can’t have done it too much harm.

Away to the Goodwood Revival now, and looking forward to reporting on it in detail next week.
