Editorial

You’ve got Part I of our Monterey coverage today with some shots of the week’s crowning event - Sunday’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Get the concours marking sheet out and tick the boxes: Implausibly large transporter(s) delivering car to event? Check. Feather-wielding flunkies to remove the minutest spot of pollen from the paintwork? Check. Winning car a French 1930s special-bodied streamliner (or on alternate years please sub ‘Duesenberg/Auburn’)? Check.

It’s too easy to make gentle fun out it but let’s face it, the world would be a poorer (something of an oxymoron when coupled with the Monterey week) place without events on the 18th fairway in August. As a counterweight, next week we should have some of the racing action from Laguna Seca.

Although Curborough and the Rockingham Motor Speedway do not have quite the ritzy associations of Biarritz or the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, the organisers of this week’s forthcoming Tour Britannia will be hoping the British version of the very successful Tour Auto will emulate its French cousin in becoming a regular annual fixture in the crowded world of historic motorsport.

The entry looks pretty good and when it comes down to it, many of the leading entries are the guys who really go for it in more exotic climes. I’m trying to find some time to see one of the days next week, I hope you can too.

PREMIUM OFFERS
24 hours a day - over 4,000 cars for sale on Classic Driver

Ferrari 250GT SWB

The 250GT SWB had, by the end of the 1960 season virtually annihilated the GT class opposition, a situation that would remain unchanged until the arrival of the AC Cobra in 1964.

True, all these results were made with alloy-bodied competition versions but the standard steel-bodied cars - many of which often doubled as road transport - ran them very close.

Chassis 2669, the magnificent example offered for sale, was delivered in 1962, to M Marriotti of Switzerland. The car remained in his hands until 1967 when it made its way to Paris, and in 1969 the car was importantly fitted with GTO heads and carburettors. France became 2669's home for many years until the mid 1990s when the car was purchased by the manager of Pink Floyd, Steve O'Rouke before being passed to its next proprietor in 1997.

The car was then driven to the South of France by its owner where it resided in his collection. In recent years the car has undergone some extremely comprehensive work, to include engine rebuild and unleaded conversion by Hoole Racing and a full gearbox rebuild and service by Moto Technique. 2669 has taken part in a number of recent rallies to include the London Lisbon Rally and the Tour Auto in which the car is a well known multi entrant.

The car is supplied with FIA and FIVA identity papers.
