Editorial

Big news today has to be the official unveiling of Jaguar’s new XK coupé. Embargoed until 06.00 this morning, you will be amongst the very first people to read about it, and an initial scan over the (as usual) very fine Jaguar press shots show a desirable car based on the Detroit Motor Show ‘design study - as if! - titled Advanced Lightweight Coupé. They’ve knocked the lumpy bits off the ‘study’, de-blinged it a bit for the mainstream market, and added a very fine interior in the best Jaguar tradition.

I like it a lot, although the pricing has yet to be agreed and the 300 bhp looks a bit weedy for a £50,000+ car. Remember P.A.G. have another front-engined V8 coupé in their armoury with an extra 100 bhp and a yet-to-be-announced price of about £75,000...

We’ve a full run down on auction events in Monterey this year (you’ll have to wait a little while for Wells Fargo to deliver the photos of the ‘Beach and Laguna Seca) and as a special feature by Simon Kidston reveals, top honours would have to go to the $3.6m paid for the yellow 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4 NART Spyder that not only finished very creditably in a World Championship motor race, but also starred as Steve McQueen’s car in The Thomas Crown Affair.

Nice to be back, more from Classic Driver to come next week.

Ferrari 365GTB/4 'Daytona'

Together with 275 GTBs, Daytonas are still the favourites of front-engine Ferrari V12 fans.

A superb car supplied new in 1971 to Mr Bruce Owen in Chelsea, London, it is finished in original colours of Blue Dino metallic exterior and Pelle Blue interior. The car then passed to John Collins, then to Lionel Sanson and finally to the Cavallino collection in 1995 where it has remained to this date.

The car is thought to have covered a mileage of 46,000 until the car was purchased by John Collins in 1989. John then gave the car to Maranello and instructed an entire documented body and mechanical rebuild. The Maranello bills show approximately £85,000 was spend between 1989 to 1990 - imagine what this would cost today!

Literally everything was restored to an ‘as new condition’ which is still reflected today as the car, although regularly serviced, has only covered 2,000 miles during its 10 year stay in the Cavallino collection.

The car is in truly amazing condition and drives as though it was only a year old. I have driven many Daytonas, and this one is clearly the best in my opinion. The car comes complete with a substantial history file, a few past MOTs, original factory build specifications, 9" rear wheels, documented Maranello rebuild and tool kit.
