Editorial

You will read details below of Audi’s decision to make a new version of their popular ‘allroad’ model next year. The company describes the new Audi A6 allroad quattro as "the most expressive way of driving an Audi A6 Avant". The new car will of course be based on the estate version of the widely-acclaimed A6 model. Can owning one of these cars be truly "the most expressive way of driving an Audi A6 Avant"? I don’t know. I could be pretty expressive in a 4.2 quattro given half the chance. Perhaps it’s something in the translation.

So Porsche are going to re-visit 928 territory with a new model line-up in a couple of year’s time. Somewhat handicapped by its launch in the ‘70s complete with op-art interior, and bold claims of pretty well replacing the 911, the front-engined V8 car has always been a favourite of ours. The sketchiest of, er...sketches, above will show you where the company is coming from. Think CLS meets 612 Scaglietti I would say.

There’s a great article by our West Coast US correspondent on the recent Pasadena Art Center College of Design Annual Classic Car Show, with some photographs that show why this centre of learning is held so highly in the automotive world. Pick one of any of the top twenty exhibiting cars and they would star in most Concours d’Elegance worldwide.

And I love US NBC Tonight Show host Jay Leno’s extraordinary 810 bhp, 1792 c.i. V-12-powered 21-foot aluminium-bodied roadster. Just where would you get that kind of engine? From a 51-ton M-47 Patton tank of course. A true motoring enthusiast, Leno also brought his McLaren F1 along to the party. Also V12-equipped, but this time from BMW’s peaceful Motorsport Division.
