Editorial

Patina, ageing, original condition - call it what you will there’s no doubting that presentation is so important when considering significant cars for sale. This week I had the opportunity of examining the famous Type 35B Bugatti that’s to be auctioned at this year’s Goodwood Revival. It is of course the car that won the first Monaco GP in 1929 driven by the mysterious Englishman William Grover-Williams (known simply as 'Williams') who became a secret agent in France during the Second World War.

The little Bugatti, presented on a podium at the auction house’s Bond Street salerooms, displays a level of ageing and wear that the most dedicated ‘restorer’ of an Alfa P3 would find impossible to replicate. Multiple layers of paint and oil stains mingle with metal worn bare and shiny by use. The tyres, of a type used pre-war but necessarily the actual ones - that would be stretching originality too far (although they do contain genuine Monaco air...), are tall of profile and dull charcoal in colour, the suspension exhibiting the familiar Bugatti positive camber.

Compare this to some of the cars that will grace the immaculate lawns of Pebble Beach next month. They will be in the most perfect condition possible, a state of mechanical and cosmetic finish undreamed of at the time of manufacture. They are truly wonderful works of art, and raise the age-old question "Which would you prefer, the patinated Bugatti 35B or the mirror-finish Duesenberg?"
