Editorial

It’s the last Classic Inside for a couple of weeks, and I hope you’ll agree it’s a good one.

Your editor has been driven around Goodwood again, and we include the experience (fabulous) in a full preview of next month’s eye-watering Revival event (even more fabulous). I’m still trying to work out exactly what Jochen Mass was doing through the fast, sweeping corners of the Sussex circuit. Whether it was left-foot braking, or just superlative car control I don’t know, but his circuit-driving technique certainly had something over the rest of us mortal’s meagre efforts. It’s probably a ‘single-seater’ thing, and (perhaps surprisingly) he quotes the F2 Surtees of the early ‘70s as one of his favourite cars.

We’ve also included an extract from the estimable Charles Harbord’s interview with works MG driver (powerboat racer, and member of the British Olympic Bobsleigh Team), Andrew Hedges. For those still weak after their exertions at the Le Mans Classic, let me remind you Hedges and other brave souls drove 7 ½ hour stints at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, over a total of an amazing 84 Hours in the mid-60s. There’s a lovely story of our intrepid driver leaving the circuit on the second lap, going through a hedge into a field for such a distance that he needed to take a ‘running jump out of the field, back on to the circuit’. It’s also a great bit of giant-killing by the little MGB beating the best semi-works Ferrari, Ford, BMW and Porsche teams.

There’s little news on the new car front, pending a ‘resumption of hostilities’ in September. Everyone seems to have gone a away and a good few will be at Monterey and Pebble Beach next week. We include an extensive saleroom preview of all the action and look forward to reporting events on our return for the next Classic Inside on 27th August.

A restful and happy holiday to you all.

Lotus Elite

Chassis No 1885, series ll, March 1962. Sold to team Elite driver C W Hunt. The car was used in the UK in the early ‘60s for competition. It was then exported to the USA in the early ‘70s.

The car was rebuilt by the head mechanic from Team Elite to competition spec but was still road useable and made better than new. The body went to Miles Wilkins of Fiberglass Services Ltd, the world’s leading Elite body-man. Since in our ownership we have further detailed the engine bay and suspension. New front shock absorbers and rear struts have been fitted. A full service has also been carried out. This car is quite magnificent, it took over three years to restore at a cost of over £70,000, making this without doubt one of the finest Elites.
