Rolls-Royce could not have chosen a better event to showcase the 100EX ‘Experimental’ convertible, four-seater than this year’s Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza, on the shores of Lake Como. Sitting in an office in a Southern England bathed in the most beautiful Spring weather, one can only imagine - with a degree of longing - how pleasant a long weekend spent in the Italian lakes at this time of year would be. I am sure there will be some of you out there going to the event, which will have more than its usual Rolls-Royce presence given the company’s 100th birthday celebrations this year, and I wish you a most pleasant time - through ever-so-slightly gritted teeth.

I can commend our preview of the May 1st Brookline Auction, a sale that includes a significant section devoted purely to the automotive artistry of the Frenchman René Lalique, whose glass radiator mascots from the 1920s and ‘30s now command prices worthy of Fabergé eggs. Given their main constituent, glass, and their location, on the front of a powerful motor car exposed to the elements, it’s hardly surprising that those surviving - and can be verified as totally authentic - fetch such colossal sums. A quarter of a million dollars may buy you ‘Renard’, a model of a fox considered to be among the rarest examples of the craftsman’s art. Searching the auctioneer’s thesaurus one hesitates to use the expression ‘under the hammer’ in these circumstances.

No ‘Classic Inside’ next week - a week’s holiday beckons - but we will be back on 7th May with a bumper issue that will feature a full preview of the forthcoming all-Aston Martin and Monaco ‘Grand Prix Historique’ auctions, a review of this year’s ‘Tour Auto’ - underway as I write - and a superb piece on Maserati’s 5000GT; the car truly ‘fit for a king’.

Ferrari Formula 1 F1/2000 ex-Michael Schumacher

Offered now for the first time ever on the open market, Ferrari F1/2000 chassis ‘205’ is a car of immense potential as a long term addition to any world class collection. No single car has probably contributed more to the Cavallino Rampante legend in recent decades. Few cars can claim to have won no less than four Grand Prix driven by arguably the greatest racing driver of all time. Even fewer can claim to have secured an F1 World Championship title, especially such a landmark one. Add to these factors the factory support now available for private owners wishing to use modern day F1 Ferraris on the track, and the sweet, user friendly nature of the F1/2000 model compared to later developments, and the appeal is obvious. Racing cars don’t get much more historic than this.
