Editorial

If one part of the summer motoring season can be considered to have kicked
off at Geneva, there can be few people out there who would disagree that the annual Goodwood Press Day truly heralds the start of historic racing activities in the UK. Lord March was the host this week, and the plans for 2004 Goodwood Events can be seen below. Not only were there a cross-section of typical ‘runners and riders’ for the two Goodwood meetings but by an amazing feat his Lordship was also able to lay on a complete
selection of all possible weather conditions - the day ranged from bright sunshine to soft hail, and pity the poor girl in the bikini guiding the dragster back along the demonstration course. Suffice it to say it looks like being another epic year and having been asked to draw attention to the fact that it is advance-tickets-only this year for all days and events, I can only say ‘You have been warned, get those orders in now!’

It’s interesting to see BMW’s take on the Golf-segment with their new 1-series. Market-positioning now is crucial and the finest tuning is required considering the likely overlap of prices and specifications within manufacturers’ ranges. One could, for say £20,000 in the UK, probably choose from a 3-series saloon, 3-series coupé, top-of-the-range 1-series or of course sister company’s MINI Cooper S. It’s over to the marketing men to decide who is targeted at by what. From a styling perspective I like it, and we know the Bavarian company has been taking some criticism in the press over their most-recent models.

I still think if they put the MINI Cooper Traveller (that we featured last week in Classic Inside) into production it would be a winner - and probably another £20,000 choice in the BMW ‘family’.

Next week in Classic Inside we’ll be previewing the exciting ‘See Red’ Ferrari and historic racing festival at Donington Park and I hope we will have a special Ferrari 250GT SWB feature to run alongside it.
