A
tale of two Concours d’Elegance in this week’s Classic
Inside. We have the first news of the 4th European Concours at Dusseldorf
(arranged by the organisers of last year’s Schwetzingen competition),
an event to which Classic Driver is an official media-partner, and
last weekend’s traditional Amelia Island extravaganza. Old
world versus New? Not at all, just different content set in top-notch
surroundings, each event having a bias towards home-grown machinery.
I think it’s safe to say you won’t see many lead-sleds
at Düsseldorf.
I think the MINI Traveller story from Geneva is a great one. Those
who are familiar with one of the motor industry’s biggest
successes of the millennium will know it’s roomy in the front,
it’s a squeeze in the back - and it has a tiny boot. The concept
produced by discrete Milanese coachbuilder Castagna has just a little
more room and this gives the car not only more space, but also a
slightly more balanced look - and the opportunity to use some marine
planking that would do credit to a ship of the line. Will BMW productionise
it? Time will tell, but the little car can do no wrong at the moment
and once the convertible is up and running I am sure there will
be room for something else.
