Editorial

I see H&H's forthcoming December sale includes an original 1980's ex-works rallying Audi Sport Quattro. A branch of motorsport often neglected on Classic Driver but having produced many significant cars of the classic genre over the years - and not all souped-up shopping machinery. Before it became a sport for heavily modified cars in the late sixties, the category was part regularity, part speed, and tested a relatively standard to car to its limits. The Rallies and Trials from before WW1 to this period were usually won by the very best (and by the definition of the times, most expensive) vehicles, as the gulf between these and standard cars was so wide - unlike today. So we have the celebrated Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts of Alpine Trial, and London-Edinburgh fame, through 1930's Invictas and Alfa Romeos, to the Appleyard XK120s, Sims Aston Martin DB2 and early sixties' 'Big Healeys' of Makinen and Moss. Fast forward to the 70s and 80s and Lancia has produced the Stratos and various mid-engined prototypes, and of course Audi introduced the ground-breaking Quattro.

So give a thought to Rally cars ancient and modern. There are also a lot of events, short and long-distance, you can do with them - and these don't have to break the bank. The prices for the cars are reasonable, I see we have a rally-prepared 1967 Porsche 911S at £25k in the 'Competition Cars' database - you could have some fun in that.

Finally on the rallying front there are of course the celebrity-laden, modern supercar flat-out 'fun runs' like the Cannonball and Gumball 3000. You will see a feature on entering a prize draw for a DB7 in this week's Classic Inside. Who knows, you could end up alongside pop group Jamiroquai's Jay Kay on an event - take a fashion tip from me though; leave the woolly hats to him.
