You join us trackside at the 2003 Goodwood Revival Race Meeting.
The weather is fine, it's the second day (first proper racing day)
of the annual time-warp that sees a simple airfield circuit set
in the gently rolling West Sussex downlands transformed back in
time to an era when men were either battling on-track in the racing
cars of the 1950s and '60s, or in the air when, as a fighter base
in 1940, it was at the forefront of the Battle of Britain.
Old
enmities are of course forgotten. Like at the Festival of Speed,
the Goodwood team have gathered a wonderful collection of drivers
from all over the world to race cars contemporary of the type they
drove in their heyday, often sharing with the car's owner. Like
Richard Attwood in an F1 BRM and Jackie Oliver an original Gulf
Ford GT40. But in contrast to the Festival this is no demonstration,
and many of the celebrity pilots are recently retired F1 drivers
of distinction who still regularly compete in sports or touring
car events. The main event, the RAC TT Celebration, will include
some very hot drivers indeed, pedalling the cars in the manner of
the original TT, Tour de France and Monthlery 1000kms - absolutely
flat out to the limits of adhesion. In fact several cars are prepared
simply for this one event on a money-no-object basis with instructions
to use all of the car's performance - and more. Pity the poor engine
builder on Monday, no, sorry make that pity the poor owner
on Monday - the engine man will have an extensive, expensive, rebuild
to undertake before next year's event.
We
are sending this edition of Classic Inside out to you especially
early today in order for you to get some of the atmosphere of the
event and, if you had not thought of going, to ring some friends
up to make that trip on Saturday or Sunday. Remember to enter into
the spirit of the occasion with at least a jacket and tie, if not
the full period dress that so many people wear. Because of the size
of the venue there are no ticket problems for the Sunday - although
you may find many of the grandstand seats have gone.
And
if you do go and see a distinguished looking chap in cheese-cutter
cap, knee britches, waistcoat and Norfolk jacket - do say 'hello';
it won't be me, but Goodwood's a terribly friendly place at Revival
time.
