We are including the first of what will no doubt be a series of
previews of this year's Goodwood Revival meeting in this week's
Classic Inside. Spending a day at the circuit on Monday this week,
when the grandstands are starting to go up and the last coat of
paint is being applied to the newly-opened shop, you begin to realise
the enormity of the task taken on by the organisers and also how
much they have achieved in a (relatively) short time. This year
is the fifth anniversary of the Revival (race meeting as opposed
to 'Festival' hillclimb) and considering the disused state of the
circuit before Lord March literally 'Revived' it, miracles have
been achieved. Trees, planted only a few years ago, are flourishing,
the famous hydrangeas in front of the grandstands are in bloom and
the white-painted pits and administrative buildings have a lustrous
gleam to them. Many Grand Prix organisers could take a leaf out
of the Goodwood book for sheer style and taste.
Great
news from Maserati - the Quattroporte photos have been released
and it looks gorgeous. A true rival to the rather antiseptic (but
no less exciting to drive) German Q-cars from BMW, Audi and Mercedes,
the car appears to combine Italian style with an element of the
'English look' much beloved by the quality in that wonderful country.
Fifteen bodywork colours, three types of wood (rosewood, mahogany,
and briarwood) and ten shades of leather are possible combinations
- and I bet there's not a wrong'un amongst them.
No
modern cars are allowed in the centre area at Goodwood - but they
ought to make an exception for the Quattroporte, it carries all
the qualities associated with the glorious event; performance, style
and elegance.
