Editorial

Our German-only version of Classic Inside this week includes editorial comments by contemporary Le Mans driver Norman Simon, Spyker-shod this weekend. Norman outlines the skills involved in driving one of the most daunting circuits in the world and dreaming the dream of winning a 'blue riband' event, one that ranks with the Monaco Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500. He explains how the team works together - but of course in qualifying each driver wants to be the fastest, the unique nature of La Sarthe, and the immense pressures on man and machinery.

OK thinks I, we'll top that for the English version; out comes the address book for the 'phone number of a British ex-Grand Prix driver who actually won the 24 Hour Race over 30 years ago. Well, I tried a few times this morning and there's no answer - he's obviously at the big race, perhaps driving in the 'Legends' Historic race on the Saturday morning. Which is where I shall be as you read this on Friday afternoon. Not on-track in a 250LM unfortunately, but with friends circuit-side setting the world to rights and generally having a ball.

Le Mans came to London's Bond St this week for a party to celebrate luxury goods maker Dunhill's involvement with the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The store was filled not only with some of the capital's brightest young things (your correspondent included), but Lynx Motors' low-drag lightweight E-type coupé. The paparazzi on the pavement were sharing space with the yellow ex-Yamaha GT40 which had travelled up in the same transporter and also a black, rather sinister, new Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Super evening and a reminder; get Le Mans this weekend out of the way and then set sights on the Goodwood Festival - it's going to be another great one, full preview to come in Classic Inside.

Who's going to win the 24 hours? Put your money on 'Bentley Boy' headlines in the dailies on Monday.

We're gonna groove - Classic Car night at the Ace Cafe

Built in 1938, bombed during the war, re-opened in 1949 and closed as a café in 1969 the Ace Café in North London has, since its re-opening in 2001, become synonymous with a celebration of all things two-wheeled and in particular that peculiarly English cult of the ‘rocker’, the black jacket and blue-jeaned terror of Britain’s pre-motorway roads in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Few people realise the second Tuesday of every month is ‘Classic Car’ night – we went along to see what was going down...
