Editorial
With a week that included no less that three visits to Newport Pagnell,
a Concours d'Etat at Waddesdon Manor and a business trip to a race
preparation specialist in Bourton on the Water, you may think it
strange of me to comment on an evening spent in London's St James
district, known for its Gentleman's Clubs, at the launch of Farlows'
new store in Pall Mall. Farlows, for the un-initiated, has a 163
year old world-wide reputation for supplying fishing tackle to the
quality, including HRH The Prince of Wales.
Now the motoring connection is not one of the heir to the throne's
penchant for Aston Martin and Bentley motor cars. No, as one who
usually prefers his fish on a plate with a slice of lemon, rather
than flapping about in a river north of Watford, I found the whole
piscine experience both novel, and rather satisfying. The level
of equipment is quite extraordinary, and to those fond of poring
over a Snap-On catalogue, or sniffing the air outside Jack Barclay's,
there will be considerable empathy. Having no idea what all the
bits and pieces are for, mattered not; when confronted with carbon
fibre, machined aluminium, and exquisite little leather reel and
rod cases, one does tend to think; ' I could get into this
'
And it's not just a bloke's thing. There are plenty of girls out
there, rod in hands, up to their armpits in Highland Spring, enjoying
the whole technological experience. It's a bit like a conversation
I had last week with an eminent Jaguar specialist on whether people
ever really get the most out of their £100,000+ restoration.
It doesn't matter, we decided, just having the beautiful object
in the garage was enough to make the cares of the day disappear,
and that big business deal pale into insignificance against the
merits of Silver Birch or Cumberland Grey.
Don't try to get hold of me this weekend - I've probably gone fishing.
