What's in a colour? What colour would you order your new car, given a completely free brief? Which colours suit which models best? And do Ferraris have to be red, Astons green? It's an interesting question prompted by the recent release of photos of Aston Martin's 2005 Porsche 911 challenger, the AMV8, in dark metallic blue. Having personally worked my way through a succession of metallic green cars in the eighties, and ordered a new Mercedes in the obligatory silver in the nineties, I am currently lamenting the current rarity of big V12 Ferraris in 'Blu Sera' with tan leather interior - and black 'Daytona' stripes of course. I cannot wait for the new Bentley Continental GT to hit the streets later this year, and to see what will be the 'must-have' shade. The oft-photographed press car in a silvery grey pearl, with a 'pinky' tinge, is a little tired now, come on Bentley let's see cars in a variety of colours to play 'what-if' with.

And don't get me on the subject of Ferrari's Schumacher/Marlboro red for the 'Enzo', please.

I had a great time in the Morgan Aero 8 last week, you can read the full report in our test-drive feature but suffice it to say I thought it was great - the colour wasn't bad either. Reports of a pink one available for test in the Malvern Hills must be an exaggeration, surely?
