The
news that the famous Maranello Concessionaires Team is to return
to racing this year is one to be welcomed by all enthusiasts of
long-distance sports car racing. Colonel Ronnie Hoare's red cars
with the Cambridge Blue stripe were a familiar sight during the
early to mid-sixties, frequently humbling the works Ferraris by
virtue of top Grand Prix drivers such as Jackie Stewart, Graham
Hill, Innes Ireland, Richard Attwood, Jo Bonnier and Michael Parkes.
Ferrari cleverly distributed works-spec cars to its N.A.R.T., Filipinetti,
Francorchamps and Maranello Concessionaire teams as a useful back-up
in case Surtees, Rodriguez, Bandini et al came unstuck in the official
factory entry. This also gave wily Enzo Ferrari the opportunity
of tactically withdrawing his 'works' cars from some events, (having
felt slighted in some way by organisers, officials or on-track rivals);
but still allow a privateer car with top-notch pilots to win for
Maranello.
At Daytona last weekend the red cars managed to re-stage the famous
1967 in-line formation over the banked track's finishing line and
on a nostalgic tack one can only wish the revived British team the
very best of luck this year.
On a Ferrari theme, the sublime 250 GTO is featured in an excellent
DVD from Circuit Driver aimed at teaching track-day and amateur
racing drivers the way round the challenging Silverstone circuit.
In-car footage of Nick Mason's car at the Northamptonshire GP track,
complete with fabulous soundtrack, is included. All the details
are in Classic Inside this week.
For the next week or so Paris is the place to be with the annual
Rétromobile show. We will of course have all the news and
photos on Classic Driver.
