Editorial

Having had the chance to view the fabulous 1953 Maserati A6GCS/53 at Bonhams Olympia Sale this week, and talked to many friends present, the question on most people's minds, (after "how do you fit in it?"), was would you rather have this, or the immaculate Ferrari 250 SWB residing in the foyer, as an exhibit prior to the same company's sale at Gstaad later this month? Tricky one. The Maserati's lines have to be seen to be believed and the SWB, fantastic car though it is, exhibits a familiar shape that can be seen in all manner of Pininfarina cars of the 50s and 60s. The Maserati, in comparison, is a true one-off. Having never seen the legendary Costin designed, Zagato bodied 450S I cannot comment, but would consider its smaller antecedent right up there in the 'knockout' category..

The other car, on a more affordable basis, that raised much discussion, was the 1990 Bentley Turbo R Saloon with an estimate of £5,000 - £6,000. What a lot of car for such a small price. There was even talk of it being a pocket money car to be handed down to children in years to come. Well I'm sorry kids, it finally went for £12,190 (including premium), but proved an aggressively priced car will fetch money when a few people have persuaded themselves they want it.

With thanks to Charis for deputising last week.

CAR OF THE WEEK

Pagani Zonda

Although it is the exuberant styling of the Zonda which leaps out at even the most casual observer, it seems inappropriate to describe the car without reiterating the story of its creation. For the Zonda is the brainchild of one man – Horacio Pagani – who conceived the awesome supercar as a tribute to one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, Juan Manuel Fangio...

CLASSIC CAR OF THE WEEK

Lancia Flaminia

The story of the Lancia Flaminia is, to say the least, complicated, with a baffling array of model variants. The earliest Flaminia, first shown in production form at the Geneva Show of 1957, was a rather boxy saloon, seating up to six people (if you opted for the bench-style front seats). It was a direct descendant of the Aurelia,...

2nd December 2002 – Auction Review – Bonhams Olympia

The halls of Olympia were bustling throughout this end-of-year extravaganza, and the cars started well with many of the early lots selling for well over their estimates. The sale also finished strongly but some high-value lots in the middle proved disappointing – most particularly, the ex-Guglielmo ‘Mimmo’ Dei 1953 Maserati A6GCS/53 Berlinetta, the star of sale and immaculately presented...
