When
Donald Healey drove an Invicta to victory in the 1931 Monte Carlo
Rally few would have thought that seventy one years later a company
with the same name would announce a spectacular 170mph supercar
at the recent British Motorshow. But recently the company, amidst
great secrecy, was reborn and a rather handsome GT car produced.
It's our Car of the Week this week and having seen it in Birmingham
I can confirm it is an elegant creature and deserves every success.
As Charis Whitcombe says in her article, many people have trod this
route before without success; good luck to Invicta.
The
entry-list for the exclusive all-Ferrari sale at Gstaad in December
is now shaping up. Not only is the oldest existing Ferrari racing-car
going under the hammer, but they have also not only managed to attract
an eclectic mix of staple (if that is applicable to Ferraris) classics
such as the 'Daytona' in coupe and Spider versions, but also the
last ever Ghia bodied car, a 375MM, and a 1970s F1 car. My favourite?
Got to be the ex Jo Schlesser 250GT SWB resplendent in the Green/White
racing colours of Schlesser's birthplace, Madagascar.
You
can see all the Gstaad
Auction cars on Classic Driver, we will be making a full preview,
as usual, nearer the time.

CAR
OF THE WEEK
|

Invicta S1
Every
year, at the British Motor Show, a handful of optimistic, entrepreneurial
types bite the bullet and pay through the nose to launch their own,
small production-run cars in the brightly-lit halls of the NEC or
Earls Court. Entrepreneurs with dreams of becoming latter-day
Colin Chapmans, or Trevor Wilkinsons. Britain is by no means the
only country to harbour such ambition but it is somehow a very British
trait, this willingness to pit David against an industry of Goliaths...

Jaguar E-type
6 cylinder
Ask people to name a classic sportscar and the Jaguar E-type of
1961 is likely to be top of the list, even today. It was so startling
for its bold but graceful looks, its incredible performance and,
not least, for its surprisingly attractive price that it made front
page news when it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show that Spring...
