Editorial

It's British International Motorshow time in the UK. Significant absentees are Mercedes-Benz and BMW, whilst Ferrari has a minimal presence and the FIAT Group have chosen not to show Maserati at all. And this is against a backdrop of the UK approaching 2001's all-time record number of new-car registrations, (2,458,769). The conclusion one could possibly draw from this is that the big car manufacturers, particularly in the premium sector, no longer feel the need to provide a 'family day-out' for Dad and the kids when, by heavy sponsorship of sporting events and corporate involvement in the Goodwood events, for example, they can get more targeted exposure for their money.

One can see the merits of this argument. However hats off to Jaguar, Aston Martin, TVR and the others who did go to Birmingham for bringing some glamour to an event otherwise lacking a little of the continental 'sparkle' found in Geneva and Paris.

Next week we will have news of an exciting new 'must have' from Classic Driver – watch this space.

PREMIUM OFFERS

Austin Healey 3000 MK III

Leather

A Big Healey with the tactile quality of an Aston and the road presence of an AC Cobra. This wonderful interpretation by Nigel Dawes of Birtsmorton Court of the Healey 3000 must be seen to be fully appreciated. Fitted with a triple set of Webbers the Big Valve, lightened and balanced engine combined with overdrive gearbox gives fantastic performance. The wide Borrani alloy spoked wheels ( Ferrari 250 SWB type) and ‘Rallye’ spec dampers help keep this georgeous beast on the road. Discreetly flared arches, revised bonnet profile, vented front wings, modified front grille, ‘Cobra’ type bumpers and full hide interior give the car a distinctive and very purposeful appearance more akin to more expensive metal.
