At the end of the year, time seems to accelerate. Perspective on things changes. And suddenly, everyone is aware that a Porsche 914/6 is undoubtedly a cult classic.
Sometimes it takes distance to find a reliable point of view. In the case of the Porsche 914, the un-Porsche-like looks made the Targa sports car a ‘People's Porsche’, hardly the most prestigious title. Too little punch, too much Karmann Ghia attitude was the disparaging verdict of Porsche purists. Nevertheless, almost 120,000 examples of the 2-seater VW/Porsche joint-venture were sold between 1969 and 1976. The Porsche 914 may have been belittled for its lack of power, but its low weight contributes towards some impressive driving characteristics – especially in those examples blessed with the more powerful six-cylinder engine, which carry the symbol ‘/6’ and have around 110bhp. It’s gone from a poor man’s Porsche to a respectable alternative to the mainstay 911.
Listed in the Classic Driver Marketplace is a pristine 914/6 which combines these desirable virtues with refreshing yellow paintwork. Classic Driver dealer Early 911s from Wuppertal, Germany, claims “it’s about the most lavishly restored 914/6 – the result of over 1,500 hours of work and mostly New Old Stock parts.
"The 914 was imported from Belgium to Germany in 2007 and restored without compromise, regardless of cost,” according to the dealership's Manfred Hering. “Since the revision, the car has driven a total of 1,000km”. Everything has its price, though. In this case, €146,000.
