Many items achieved record prices. Lot 158, for example, a masterpiece in steel from the 1940s by French artist Jean Royère sold for $68,500 – five times its estimate.

The impressive results for the sales show how mid-20th Century pieces are catching the collector’s eye. The most expensive item in the sale was the Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann sitting room suite ‘Gonse’, which sold for $1,426,500.

Alexander Payne, Worldwide Director of Design at Phillips de Pury & Company was delighted with the results, confident that the company’s successful autumn sales had built a strong foundation for a good finish to the year. 20th Century design is clearly on the up.
