18/11/2011 The Fjord Open 36: At home in lakes and bays
The latest Open 36, from German boatmaker Hanse, is designed to be a more accessible example of the ‘open day boat’ class, made famous by Wally and VanDutch.

There’s no denying the similarity with the Wally Tender, which is not surprising as both boats come from the pen of designer Patrick Banfield. However, at a price of 220,000 euros, the version by Hanse is considerably more affordable and yet cannot be seen as yet another ‘plastic boat’.
At almost 11 metres long the spacious Fjord 36, with its commanding cockpit and uncluttered layout, is an understated and truly practical design. Underneath the deck is a bedroom, with a full bathroom/WC to allow for longer trips in comfort.
Power comes from two, 300bhp Volvo Penta diesels (no petrol V8s here) and on full throttle the self-styled ‘terror of the fjords’ can reach a maximum speed of 42 knots.
Affordable, stylish and fast, the new Fjord 36 has a lot going for it.
