Under perfect blue skies, the 33rd running of the historic races that are such an important part of the whole Monterey week took place at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Cooper was the featured marque, although as the meeting was 'Presented by Toyota' it was perhaps only appropriate that Ricardo Zonta driving the team's current F1 car should set a fastest lap for the circuit that he bettered on every day of the meeting.

But that was the only showing of a modern racing car as the meeting was, as always, centred around historic racing machinery, much of it unique to American racing like the fantastic 28-car grid 1966-1972 Historic Trans-Am Cars race won by Jamey Mazzotta of Newport Coast, CA in his 1970 Boss 302 Mustang. A race considered by many to be the finest of the weekend.

There were no Can Am cars this year, although the genre's early days was represented by the 1959-1965 Sports Racing Cars race, an event won by Terry Miller of Simi Valley, CA in his 4266cc 1964 Webster in a grid packed with Cooper Monacos and Lotus 23Bs.



Ferraris cleaned up in the race for 1955-1962 Production Sports Cars, with Dutchman John Hugenholtz finishing ahead of William Connor and Nicola Soprano all in 250 GTs. In addition to Hugenholtz making the long journey from Europe there was also Barrie Williams (1960 Cooper Monaco), Ollie Crosthwaite (1956 Cooper Bobtail), Peter Neumark (1955 Cooper-Jaguar) and Rod Jolley (1958 Cooper T-45/51 F-1) - all regular British historic racers.
