2012 Monterey Week Sales Newsflash: RM to offer DB3S and significant racing Porsches
1955 Aston Martin DB3S, chassis DB3S/118: $3,500,000 - 4,000,000

Adding colour to another blockbusting RM catalogue, the latest entries to its forthcoming August sale include a 1955 Aston Martin DB3S in Dutch racing orange and the bright red, ex-Jo Siffert, STP-sponsored 1971 Porsche 917/10.

The Aston Martin, chassis DB3S/118 (Est. $3,500,000 - 4,000,000), was originally sold to Dutch racing driver Hans Davids. In its first year as a customer racing car it was fitted with a works-specification twin-plug head by the factory, and raced extensively in Europe, including a top-three finish at Goodwood in April 1956.

These cars are rare in the saleroom – hence it could be one of the stars of this year's Monterey sale week. Other Astons to be offered at RM’s familiar Portola Palace venue include a LHD 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT, chassis number DB4GT/0104/L (Est. $1,500,000 - 1,900,000), and a 'concours quality', restored 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Volante (Est. $850,000 - 1,100,000).

The 1971 Porsche 917/10 Spyder, chassis 917/10-002, was the Stuttgart factory’s second foray in the lucrative Can Am series with a cut-down 917. Swiss driver Jo Siffert raced this car in six of the ten rounds of that year’s championship, often finishing well, but hampered by a lack of the colossal power available to the 8-litre McLarens. In 1972, the tables would be turned, with the Penske-run factory turbocharged 917/10 Spyder taking all before it.

The STP car, so significant in the history of the marque, is estimated at $2,900,000 - 3,500,000.

Other colourful and rare Porsche racing cars entered at the 17-18 August event include the 1981 Porsche 935 JLP-3 IMSA racing car (Est. $1,300,000 - 1,800,000), the 1963 Porsche 904/6 Carrera GTS Factory Works Prototype (chassis 906-002, Est. $1,800,000 - 2,200,000) and a rare 1998 Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion. This street version of Porsche’s 1998 Le Mans-winning car is estimated at $1,250,000 - 1,400,000.
